Topic: Propecia Generic Date 2012 - Discussion with Dr. Vitality

Hi everyone,
I've been prescribed a generic version of Propecia (finasteride) from 2012 and I'm wondering if anyone has any insights about its effectiveness and safety. I know it's an older batch but my pharmacist assured me that the quality is still intact.
Would love to hear from others who might have taken generics from this period or perhaps even a doctor with some insight.
Thanks!

Hello BaldGuru987,
Thank you for reaching out. It's great that you're cautious about the medication you're taking.
In terms of generics from 2012, as long as they were stored properly and are within their expiration date, they should be just as effective and safe as newer batches. Finasteride is a stable compound with a long shelf life when kept under proper conditions.
That being said, it's essential to ensure that the generic was manufactured by a reputable company and approved by your country’s regulatory body (like the FDA in the US). This ensures that the medication meets the required standards for purity, potency, and quality.
Have you experienced any side effects so far? It might be helpful if you could provide more details about how it's been working for you.

Hi DrVitality,
Thanks a lot for the response! So far, I haven't experienced any side effects which is great news. I’ve been taking it for about three months now and noticed some minor hair regrowth but nothing drastic.
Would you say that the dosage matters more than the batch date? Also, how long does it typically take to see significant results?
Thanks again for your help!

You're welcome, BaldGuru987.
The dosage is definitely crucial. Finasteride works best when taken consistently and at the prescribed dose of typically 1mg daily for men with male pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia). The batch date should not significantly affect its efficacy if it's within its expiration period and has been stored correctly, as finasteride does have a relatively stable shelf life.
Regarding hair regrowth, results can vary greatly from person to person. Generally speaking, you might start noticing some changes after about 3-6 months of consistent use. However, many men report seeing more significant improvements after around 9-12 months. Patience is key with finasteride!
It's also worth noting that finasteride works by inhibiting the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which can slow down hair loss and promote regrowth in some cases, but individual results will vary based on factors such as genetic predisposition, age when starting treatment, etc.
Keep up with your regimen and continue monitoring any changes. If you have concerns or if you feel like the medication isn't working effectively for you after a reasonable period of time, it would be wise to follow up with your doctor.
Wishing you all the best on your journey!
