Topic: Prednisone for Dogs - Dosage and Usage Guidance

Posted by PawsAndClaws (12/08/2023 9:45 AM)

Hi everyone,

I recently noticed my dog has been scratching a lot, and our vet mentioned he might have allergies. They suggested trying prednisone to see if it helps. I’ve never given him any medication like this before, so I’m a bit nervous. Can anyone share their experience or advice on how to administer this safely?

PawsAndClaws,

I understand your concerns. Prednisone can be very effective for managing allergies and inflammation in dogs, but it's important to follow the vet’s instructions carefully. Here are a few tips:

  • Always give the exact dose prescribed by your veterinarian.
  • Administer the medication at regular intervals to maintain its effectiveness.
  • Watch out for side effects like increased thirst or changes in appetite.

If you have specific questions about dosage or any concerns, it's best to reach out directly to your vet. They will be able to provide personalized advice based on your dog’s condition and health history.

Hi PawsAndClaws,

I’m a veterinarian, so I can offer some insight. Prednisone is an anti-inflammatory corticosteroid that helps reduce allergic reactions and inflammation in dogs.

Here’s what you need to know:- Dosage: The typical starting dose for prednisone in dogs is 0.5 mg per pound of body weight. This might be given once a day, or sometimes split into two smaller doses.- Duration: It's crucial not to abruptly stop the medication if your dog has been on it for more than a week. Gradually tapering off will help prevent rebound effects and side effects.

Side Effects:- Increased thirst- Increased urination- Changes in appetite (may lead to weight gain)- Panting

If you notice any severe side effects such as lethargy, vomiting, or diarrhea, contact your vet immediately. Remember, prednisone can have long-term side effects if used incorrectly, so it’s essential to follow the prescribed treatment plan closely.

Feel free to reach out if you need more information!

Thank you, DogLover78 and VetsBestFriend! Your advice is really helpful. I'll make sure to follow the vet's instructions closely and keep an eye on any side effects.

One more question – should I give prednisone with food or without? Also, how long does it take for me to see improvement in my dog’s symptoms?

PawsAndClaws,

Good questions!

  • With Food: It's generally recommended to give prednisone with food, as this can help prevent stomach irritation.

  • Improvement Timing: You might start seeing a reduction in symptoms within the first few days. However, for some dogs, it may take up to 1-2 weeks before they show significant improvement.

Keep in mind that every dog is different and responses can vary. If you don’t notice any changes after two weeks or if your dog's condition worsens, contact your vet for a follow-up appointment.

Hi PawsAndClaws,

I had to give prednisone to my Lab last year for severe allergies. It really helped him! I noticed less scratching and more energy within a week, which was great relief.

Just remember that consistency is key. If you feel unsure at any point, don't hesitate to call your vet or schedule another appointment. They can offer further guidance based on how your dog responds.
