Forum Title: Seeking Advice on Accutane Availability in Alberta

User1234 (User)

Hey everyone,

I've been dealing with severe acne for years now. My dermatologist recommended that I try Accutane, but it's not available over-the-counter and I'm having trouble finding a pharmacy or doctor who can prescribe it to me here in Calgary. Does anyone have any experience with this? How did you get your hands on it?

Hi User1234,

First of all, thank you for reaching out! Accutane is indeed a powerful medication that requires a prescription due to its strong effects and potential side-effects. It's crucial to go through the proper channels when obtaining such medications.

Would you be open to discussing this further with a healthcare professional in our forum? We have several medical professionals who could provide more detailed advice!

Hello User1234,

I understand your frustration and can assure you that it's perfectly normal for Accutane, or its generic form Isotretinoin, to be hard to find. This medication is tightly regulated due to its potency and potential side effects.

To get a prescription for Accutane in Alberta:1. Visit Your Dermatologist: You'll need to have a consultation with your dermatologist who will assess the severity of your acne. They might also run some blood tests.2. Sign an Informed Consent Form: Because Accutane can cause serious side effects, patients must sign a consent form agreeing they understand these risks and are aware that women should not get pregnant while on this medication.3. Regular Follow-ups: Your doctor will want to see you regularly while you're on the medication to monitor your progress and manage any side effects.

Can you tell me more about what happened during your consultation with your dermatologist? Did they discuss these steps with you?

Hi DermFanatic,

Thank you for replying! During my last consultation, my dermatologist did mention all of those things. However, she wasn't able to prescribe it on the spot and suggested that I wait a few weeks before returning because she wanted to ensure the severity was consistent over time.

I'm just worried about where to get it once she does write out the prescription. Any advice?

You're welcome! It's good practice for your dermatologist to monitor your condition closely before prescribing such a strong medication. Once you have your prescription, here are some tips:

  1. Authorized Pharmacists: In Alberta, only certain pharmacists can dispense Isotretinoin/Accutane due to its classification under the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA). You'll need to find one of these authorized pharmacies.
  2. Specialty Pharmacies: Some specialty pharmacies may also be able to fill this prescription if you're having trouble finding an authorized pharmacist locally.
  3. Online Pharmacies: While online options can be convenient, make sure they are reputable and legally certified to dispense medications in Canada.

Also, keep in mind that the cost might vary depending on your insurance coverage or public health plan. It’s a good idea to check with your insurer beforehand.

Hey User1234,

I had to go through a similar process last year for my acne. My dermatologist recommended it and I found an authorized pharmacy in Edmonton that filled the prescription. Just be patient, and follow up with your doctor regularly as suggested. Good luck!

Thanks so much, HappyHealing! That gives me some hope. I’ll keep checking with my dermatologist and hopefully find an authorized pharmacy soon.

DermFanatic, thanks again for the detailed information. It’s really reassuring to know what steps need to be taken.
