Forum Topic: Accutane 40mg Usage and Side Effects
Post by SkincareGuru:
Hi everyone,
I've been prescribed Accutane (isotretinoin) for my severe acne. My doctor has recommended a dosage of 40 mg per day, divided into two doses. I’ve heard it’s effective but also comes with some serious side effects. Anyone here have experience with this treatment or any advice?

Hey SkincareGuru,
I’ve been on Accutane for about six months now and can definitely share my experience. It really does work wonders for severe acne, but it’s important to be aware of the potential side effects. I was initially prescribed 40 mg a day as well, split into two doses.
The most common side effects include dry skin, lips, and eyes. You’ll need to stay hydrated and use plenty of moisturizer. Also, you must avoid sun exposure since Accutane makes your skin more sensitive.

Thanks DermDude!
That’s good to know about the side effects. My dermatologist mentioned those as well. I’m a bit concerned about the risk of depression and other mental health issues that some people talk about online. Have you or anyone else experienced anything like that?

Hey SkincareGuru,
I’ve been taking Accutane for almost three months now, also at 40 mg per day. I haven’t noticed any significant changes in my mood, but it’s essential to monitor this and discuss with your healthcare provider if you feel any changes.
Mental health can be affected by isotretinoin, so it's crucial to stay aware of how you’re feeling emotionally. My doctor recommended regular check-ins just to make sure I’m okay mentally.

WorryFreeWes makes a good point. It’s important to communicate any changes in mood or mental health with your doctor right away. They can monitor it and adjust the treatment if necessary.
Also, SkincareGuru, remember that Accutane is a strong medication with many restrictions, especially concerning pregnancy. You must use two forms of birth control while on this drug unless you’re surgically sterile. Your dermatologist should have provided you with a consent form explaining all these risks and precautions.

Thanks for the info DermDude!
I’ve been given the consent form, and I’m aware of the pregnancy-related risks. My doctor emphasized that as well.
Another thing I want to ask is about buying Accutane. Can I buy it from any pharmacy, or are there specific requirements?

Hello SkincareGuru,
You can only get isotretinoin (Accutane) with a prescription and usually through pharmacies participating in the iPledge program, which monitors patient compliance with certain requirements like birth control use. This ensures everyone taking the medication is aware of and adhering to safety protocols.
Always check if your local pharmacy participates before making a purchase. If they don’t, you might need to go to one that does or find an online pharmacy approved for iPledge.

Thanks PharmacyPal!
That’s really helpful information. I’ll make sure to verify with the pharmacies near me.
Everyone else, thanks so much for your advice and sharing your experiences! It definitely makes me feel more prepared going into this treatment. If anyone has any additional tips or things they wish they knew before starting Accutane, please share!

You’re welcome, SkincareGuru!
One last tip: Keep a journal of how you're feeling physically and mentally while on the medication. This can be helpful for your doctor to see if there are any patterns or changes over time.
And remember, consistency is key with isotretinoin. Stick to your prescribed dosage and follow-up appointments closely. Good luck!
